Poly vs. Wood

One of the first steps in buying outdoor furniture or structures is deciding between products made of poly material or wood. This choice will have a big impact on how your furniture looks, feels, and weathers the elements. Each material has its benefits, but which one is best for your home?

Wooden furniture is classic, time-honored, and malleable. Available in a wide variety of species, strengths, colors, etc. Wood will weather with age and become softer and faded; thus adding character to your piece. Unfortunately, the structural integrity of the furniture may decline faster than pieces made from poly lumber when exposed to the outdoors.

Poly outdoor furniture is eco-friendly and sustainable. It typically lasts up to 20 years, even in extreme climates and is specifically made for outdoor life. These pieces are definitely more of an initial investment than traditional wooden pieces, but you’ll end up saving money in the long run. Maintenance on these pieces is almost nonexistent. Poly furniture doesn’t splinter, crack, or fade in the sun.

The choice really comes down to your personal preference for your outdoor space. If you want a more natural, organic feel with character; wooden furniture will probably be best for you, but don’t immediately discount poly furniture as it is available with a natural wood grain look. If you need something easy, maintenance-free and durable; poly furniture is an obvious choice. Whichever you choose, your furniture should reflect your personal style and fit the needs of your space.
